Redgranite approves establishing All Terrain Vehicle route in village

During a special Redgranite Village Board meeting held on May 23, the board voted to approve establishing a route for ATVs. The routes approved will connect to other routes in surrounding townships in order to provide a way for ATV riders to get to the trails in Marquette County and other trails in the western side of Waushara County.

However, the approval is pending Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources approval of the proposed routes and a business-owner’s approval. Redgranite Police Chief Kyle Tarr, who has reviewed the proposed route, stressed the route can only be used to get to other township routes and to get fuel. The board also had village counsel Joan Olson review the proposed ATV ordinance, which the board also approved, with a few minor changes.

Prior to the meeting, the village held a public hearing about the Community Development Block Grant eligibility, with a presentation by Mary Wagner, with MSA finance. No one from the public attended the hearing.

Wild Rose American Legion Memorial now in place along State Road 22

Members of the Wild Rose Lions Club and American Legion Daniel Dopp Post 370 gathered for a photo after the placing of a Vietnam War Bell AH-1 Huey Cobra Attack Helicopter on a permanent site on May 24 outside of the Village of Wild Rose. The Lions leased a section of the club property to the Legion to create a memorial to honor all the American Veterans and those currently serving in the military.

One may wonder what they would do if they acquired a decommissioned military helicopter.

Many years ago, Ted Steinke and Emil Zak of the Wild Rose American Legion approached the Wild Rose Village Board regarding the possible acquisition of a military helicopter which they thought could be used as a memorial for the area’s veterans. The question was, where could it be displayed so people could see it?

One thought was to place it on a corner piece of land along State Road 22 and 18th Road in front of the Wild Rose Lions Club Building as people entered the village from the southwest corner. In checking with the State Department of Transportation, there wasn’t enough room there for the helicopter to be off the state road right-of-way, and the Lions used the rest of the land for Wild Rose Days and to promote other activities held on the premises.

Another thought was to place it somewhere at Roberts Park on River Street, but the village was concerned with possible security and liability issues if the helicopter was placed there. (The park has continued to be developed and utilized more since then.)

So the Legion Post was turned down again. In the meantime, the Vietnam War Bell Att-1 Huey Cobra attack helicopter was acquired, and Emil Zak designed a trailer to place the chopper on and pulled it through parades. Along the way the Wild Rose Airport Association allowed the helicopter to be displayed at the Wild Rose Idlewild Airport for the June fly-ins. Later an agreement was reached so it could be housed there as well. Those who attended the fly-ins were certainly interested in the piece of American history.

Over time the helicopter was placed near the entrance of the airport, and it was thought that it could be displayed there permanently by setting it on a cement slab. But, things happened and it became clear that the helicopter would need to be removed from the area, despite the airport being owned by the village. (The village was not the party involved with the decision to move the helicopter.)

Springwater Covered Bridge damaged following hit and run on June 3

Springwater Covered Bridge damaged

Two days after the Springwater Covered Bridge celebrated its 20th anniversary, a large vehicle drove through the bridge scraping the collar-joists as they passed through on June 3.

The bridge sustained damage to the collar-joists with the costs for repair yet to be determined, according to Town of Springwater Supervisor Garth Towne.

“We will repair it,” he said. “The bottom cord of the rafters was splintered and beat-up so we’ll have to see how much it is going to cost.”

With the amount of damage done to the bridge, the vehicle is believed to have sustained some type of damage as well because every rafter all the way through was beat-up or chipped.

The Town of Springwater hopes to begin making repairs within a week, depending on how quickly the town can get someone to assist with the repairs. In the meantime, Towne emphasizes the bridge itself is architecturally sound.

“Structurally it hasn’t hurt much as far as the side trusses, which is the strength of the bridge” he said. “It was just the roof rafters, so this hasn’t damaged the integrity of the bridge.”

Towne believes the Town of Springwater will look into getting help from a local carpenter to help with making the repairs.

“Nobody got paid the first time but this time we may have to hire a carpenter who is at ease 13 feet up in the air,” Towne said.

While the repairs are being made the bridge will be closed for about a week, according to Towne.

“The strength of the bridge hasn’t been hurt, just the looks, and we will repair it,” said Towne. “It will be as good new within a week or two.”

If anyone knows of any information regarding this hit and run, please contact the Waushara County Sheriff’s Department at 920-787-3321 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-800-5219.

The Springwater Covered Bridge Road is located in Waushara County, between County A and Portage Road, just west of Saxeville.
